n the spring of 2008, the Stephanie Marie Burgos scholarship was born with the informal selection of our first scholar during an alumni honor award and student senior award ceremony at Grover Cleveland High School in Ridgewood, New York. The night was primarily dedicated to honor seniors by highlighting their achievements over their four years at the school. There was one student who stood out, receiving several awards in the arts and performed during the ceremony. This student was like the Taylor Swift of Cleveland as she got up for every award that was mentioned. As she joined the school chorus and performed her talent and charisma stood out. There was no denial how much she was like Stephanie. Christine's personality shined on that night. Her guidance counselor was approached about the family's intent to provide financial support to her for the next four years of her college career in Stephanie's memory. Stephanie was tragically lost in the beginning of her sophomore year in 2005 and 2008 was the year she too was scheduled to graduate high school. What better way to celebrate Stephanie's life via someone who lived parallel lives in facing adversities in their school and personal experiences. Compelled to create something to memorialize Stephanie, Christine was the first scholarship recipient. In 2010, the organization became legally incorporated and is now a recognized Non-profit organization 501(c)(3). We survived the 2020 pandemic and continue to raise money to support our current scholars in Stephanie's memory. In addition, the scholarship program connects scholars with a board member as a mentor, providing emotional support throughout their four years in college.
