Cause Description:
We improve maternal health by teaching women to care for other women. Our focus is on Sierra Leone, locale of the infamous "Blood Diamond" war. We work with birth attendants, teaching them to teach the other women about sanitation, nutrition, and family planning. We also teach prenatal care, safe delivery techniques, and postnatal care. We have no paid staff in the United States, relying entirely on volunteers to reduce overhead. Volunteers pay their own way to Sierra Leone. We provide a living wage to our Sierra Leonean staff, who follow up with the groups we've trained to help resolve problems and provide ongoing support, coordinate with national and local officials, and administer the program in country.
