Cause Description:
The Partners for Rural Health in the Dominican Republic's vision is to encourage a healthier life through sharing, compassion, and learning across cultures. We are a nonprofit organization in Maine that promotes continuity of care and collaboration in the Dominican Republic. The program was established in 1995 by the University of Southern Maine, College of Nursing and Health Professions. Twice a year, nursing students, faculty, physicians and health care volunteers work with counterparts in the Dominican Republic to provide personal care and health education to over 2000 patients in 15 rural villages. Working out of homes, schoolrooms, or chapels, the volunteers teach nutrition, dental hygiene, and health education as well as care for injuries, infection, and chronic health problems. Participation in the program offers exciting learning opportunities in service delivery, teamwork and cross-cultural experiences.
