The Basel Action Network (BAN) BAN is the world’s only organization focused on confronting the global environmental injustice and economic inefficiency of toxic trade (toxic wastes, products and technologies) and preventing its devastating impacts. Working at the nexus of human rights and environment, we confront the issues of environmental justice at a macro level, preventing disproportionate and unsustainable dumping of the world’s toxic waste and pollution on the global village’s poorest residents. At the same time, we actively promote sustainable and just solutions to the world’s consumption and waste crises — halting waste trade, while promoting green, toxic free and democratic design of consumer products. BAN is named for the United Nations’ Basel Convention, the world’s only international treaty on waste and waste trade and works both domestically and globally. BAN, with its considerable impact on global trade policy (Basel Convention) and its numerous allied partner NGOs around the world, enjoys global recognition for its work. Current United Nations Environment Program Executive Director Dr. Achim Steiner has said about BAN: “BAN’s advocacy has been a beacon for global environmental justice that is very much welcomed by the United Nations.” This January, Jim Puckett, Founder and Executive Director of BAN was given the International Electronic Recycling Congress’s Cowbell Award for its efforts to “prevent the globalization of toxic waste…and its contribution to comprehensive strategies for proper treatment of e-waste across the globe.” BAN is a 501(c)3 charitable organization located in the United States, based in Seattle, Washington.
